bar-fund is a Los Angeles-based grant-building initiative composed of artists who wish to celebrate and assist other artists. While hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised for the expansion of art museums in our city, comparatively very little goes directly to living artists. By tending bar at thirty-seven openings, talks, performances, and sundry events, and with the accumulation of your generous tips and donations, we gathered enough money to distribute ten grants of $1,150.78 each to artists living in Los Angeles. We sought to recognize artists in various moments in their career—from the very beginning to the hard middle— and artists who haven’t recently obtained significant monetary support. In February, we received almost 200 applications, all from extraordinary artists, each and every deserving of this grant—testimony to the need for more direct-to-artist funding in our community.

This project was created as an act of solidarity with and investment in the vitality of our peers, colleagues, and community. Our goal wasn't just to help fellow artists, but to bring attention to the lack of direct-to-artist grants that exist in Los Angeles, and the urgency for living artists to receive unrestricted financial support.

Rather than touting a singular vision of “worthiness,” the inaugural bar-fund grantees reflect the multitude of perspectives both within the panel and our community at large. bar-fund’s future grant panels will include a rotating artist-cohort; if you are an artist and would like to take part in this fundraising initiative or for more information, please email us.
